AI Automation Engineer
Build AI agents and automations for small-business and MSP clients on Claude and Microsoft 365, with a person approving what matters. Remote, US-based.
AI automation engineer building LLM agents and business-system integrations for clients on Claude, Microsoft 365, and the CRMs they run. Not a machine-learning research or QA test-automation role.
Most small and mid-sized businesses have heard that AI can save them hours every week. Very few have anyone who can make it work securely inside Microsoft 365, the CRM, and the accounting system. White Knights delivers that work for its clients. We’re looking for an engineer who has been the standout builder on every team they’ve joined.
About White Knights
White Knights is a US-based, remote-first IT projects firm. We work for businesses directly and for managed service providers (MSPs), who bring us in under their own brand. Every project has a fixed scope, a documented finish, and a labor warranty. We use AI across the business under one rule: agents draft, people decide. We keep a deliberately small bench of senior engineers and hire only the best.
The role
This is a senior role with a high technical bar. You’ll design and deliver AI automation projects for small-business and MSP clients, working directly with our founder and building mainly on Anthropic’s Claude and Microsoft 365. You may also work on internal tooling that supports our own operations. A year from now, success looks like a portfolio of client automations in daily use, each documented and handed over cleanly, and an AI automation offering our clients buy and recommend.
What you’ll build
- AI agents and automations for client workflows, such as intake, document processing, reporting, and sales and service follow-up, with human approval wherever it matters
- Integrations with the systems clients already run: Microsoft 365 through Microsoft Graph, CRMs such as HubSpot or Salesforce, accounting platforms, and line-of-business apps, using APIs and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers
- Discovery and process mapping with business owners and MSP partners, to find what’s worth automating and what isn’t
- The guardrails: evals before anything ships, a log of what each agent did, defenses against prompt injection, and client data kept under strict security controls
- Handoff documentation clients can own, like every White Knights project
Required
- 3+ years building software professionally in Python or TypeScript
- A track record as a top engineer on your previous teams, trusted with the hardest builds, which your references will confirm
- LLM-powered tools or agents you shipped that people use in their regular work, built on the Claude, OpenAI, or Azure OpenAI APIs with tool use or function calling, and the ability to walk through exactly how each was built
- Integrations with business-system APIs such as Microsoft Graph, a CRM (HubSpot or Salesforce), or an accounting platform (QuickBooks or Xero)
- At least one production workflow on Power Automate, n8n, Make, or Zapier, and the judgment to know when code is the better choice
- AI solutions delivered for clients or business stakeholders, with documentation a non-technical owner can follow
- Based in the US
Preferred
- MSP or IT services experience (strongly preferred)
- MCP servers you’ve built, or work with Claude Code or the Claude Agent SDK
- Evals, tracing, and monitoring for LLM systems
- Retrieval (RAG) over SharePoint or other business documents
- Copilot Studio, Microsoft Purview, sensitivity labels, or data loss prevention
- Voice AI agents built with Vapi, Retell, Twilio, or similar
- Security practice for AI systems: least-privilege access, secrets management, and audit logging, plus exposure to SOC 2
- PowerShell, and small web apps deployed on Azure, Cloudflare, or similar
Pay and terms
- $90–$125 per hour, based on experience
- 1099 contract position, with a planned path to W-2 employment and benefits as our team grows. You’re welcome to stay 1099 if you prefer
- Full-time or part-time availability
- Your access to company and client data is limited to what each project needs
- After an offer: we complete a background check and ask you to sign a confidentiality agreement. We do this because you’ll work directly with client data, and our clients trust us to keep it protected
Our standard
We hire the engineer other engineers go to. Every automation is tested, logged, and documented before a client relies on it, and people approve what an agent drafts. You’ll talk with business owners as often as you write code, and you’ll explain every design decision in plain language.
How to apply
