Senior IT Project Engineer
Take Microsoft 365, network, server, security, and AI projects from scoping call to documented handoff. Project work only, with no help desk, tickets, or on-call.
Senior IT project engineer for Microsoft 365, networks, servers, security, and AI. Project work only: no help desk, no tickets, no on-call.
Small and mid-sized businesses keep putting off the IT projects that matter: the email migration, the firewall replacement, the server that’s out of support, the AI rollout nobody has time to plan. Their IT provider is buried in tickets, so the projects stall. White Knights finishes them. We’re looking for a senior engineer who can take any of those projects from scoping call to documented handoff, and who has been the go-to engineer on every team they’ve joined.
About White Knights
White Knights is a US-based, remote-first IT projects firm. We work for businesses directly and for managed service providers (MSPs), who bring us in under their own brand when their engineers are busy. We only do projects, each with a fixed scope, a documented finish, and a labor warranty. We don’t do managed services or break-fix, and we don’t resell hardware. We keep a deliberately small bench of senior engineers and hire only the best.
The role
This is a senior role with a high technical bar, for an engineer from the MSP or IT consulting world. You’ll work directly with our founder, who scopes and sells the work, and you’ll own delivery: the plan, the work, the testing, and a handoff the client’s team can actually use. A year from now, success looks like dozens of projects across our catalog finished cleanly, MSP partners asking for you by name, and your runbooks setting the standard for every engineer who joins after you.
The projects
- Microsoft 365: email migrations from Google Workspace and Exchange, GoDaddy tenant transfers, tenant-to-tenant moves, and SharePoint and file-server migrations
- Security: Microsoft 365 hardening (Entra ID, Conditional Access, Intune), SPF/DKIM/DMARC, cyber-insurance readiness
- AI: Microsoft 365 Copilot readiness and rollout, data-governance cleanup, and AI solutions built into client workflows
- Infrastructure: firewall, switching, and Wi-Fi refreshes; Hyper-V and VMware host builds; backup and recovery with tested restores
- Business IT: office moves, startup IT setups, IT closet cleanups, documentation build-outs, assessments, and rescues of stalled projects
What you’ll do
- Lead projects end to end: review discovery notes, write the plan and cutover runbook, do the work, test it, and close it out
- Design and deploy AI solutions for clients, and explain exactly how each one is configured, secured, and governed
- Work directly with business owners and MSP project leads, explaining technical tradeoffs in plain language
- Deliver white-label work inside an MSP partner’s own PSA, RMM, and documentation tools when the project calls for it
- Write as-built documentation, diagrams, and a “common errors and fixes” guide for every handoff
- Help scope new projects by estimating effort and flagging risks before a fixed-fee proposal goes out
- Turn what you learn into reusable runbooks and checklists
Required
- 7+ years of hands-on IT infrastructure engineering, including 3+ years at an MSP or IT consultancy (MSP experience strongly preferred)
- A track record as a top engineer on your previous teams: the senior, lead, or escalation engineer trusted with the hardest projects, which your references will confirm
- Extensive hands-on AI experience, including AI solutions you’ve deployed for clients (such as Microsoft 365 Copilot rollouts, Copilot Studio agents, or LLM-powered automations), and the ability to walk through exactly how each was set up: architecture, data access and permissions, security controls, and results
- Microsoft 365 migrations you led as the primary engineer, plus deep administration of Entra ID or Active Directory, Exchange Online, Intune, and Conditional Access
- Firewall, switch, and Wi-Fi deployments on at least one major platform (Fortinet, SonicWall, Cisco Meraki, Ubiquiti, or Aruba), plus Windows Server with Hyper-V or VMware host builds or migrations
- Projects delivered directly to clients, from planning through a documented handoff
- Based in the US
Preferred
- Certifications such as MS-102, AZ-104, MD-102, SC-300, CCNA, Fortinet NSE/FCP, VCP-DCV, or Security+
- DMARC enforcement projects and Defender for Office 365
- Microsoft Purview, sensitivity labels, and data loss prevention
- Migration tools such as BitTitan MigrationWiz, ShareGate, or Quest
- Hudu or IT Glue, and ConnectWise, Autotask, or HaloPSA
- PowerShell scripting
- Azure IaaS or Azure Virtual Desktop
- Mac management with Intune or Jamf
- CIS, NIST CSF, HIPAA, or cyber-insurance questionnaires
Pay and terms
- $75–$100 per hour, based on experience and certifications
- 1099 contract position, with a planned path to W-2 employment and benefits as our team grows. You’re welcome to stay 1099 if you prefer
- Full-time or part-time availability
- Some cutovers happen in evenings or on weekends, scheduled well in advance
- Occasional travel to client sites, with travel costs reimbursed
- Your access to client systems is limited to what each project needs
- After an offer: we complete a background check and ask you to sign a confidentiality agreement. We do this because you’ll hold admin access to client systems, and our clients trust us to keep those systems and their data protected
Our standard
We hire the engineer other engineers call when a project has to go right. You’ll often be the only engineer on a project, accountable from plan to handoff. And a project isn’t done until someone else could support what you built.
How to apply
Use the Apply button on this page. Include your resume and, in a short note, tell us about the hardest IT project you’ve finished and one AI solution you deployed for a client, including how it was set up.
White Knights welcomes applicants of every background. If you need an accommodation during the application process, let us know.
